BBN SpyGlass

BBN Spyglass is an analysis environment for viewing packet traces. BBN SpyGlass's has over a dozen diagrams that show different view of the protocol trace. The diagram showed different views of packets in time and over protocol layers. Features from one diagram can be correlated with features in other diagrams using linked highlighting. For example, when an object is clicked-on one diagram, related objects are highlighted in other diagrams. BBN SpyGlass can parse traces collected by tcpdump, snoop, and ascii text. Protocol parsers included the TCP/IP, CORBA, and application-layer protocols.

Some of the feature of BBN SpyGlass can be seen in the following documents.

BBN SpyGlass was written in Common Lisp using CLIM display manager and shows the sophistication of applications that can be developed Common Lisp. At the time BBN SpyGlass ran on Symbolics Lisp Machines and large Sun Servers, but by modern standards (set by Office 2004), BBN SpyGlass is compact. BBN SpyGlass features could be ported to JAVA or C++. For an assessment of the difficulty, please send us email at jzinky@bbn.com
