Abstract Survivability is a relatively new way to look at the security issues of computer and information systems. As the technologies supporting this new approach emerge and mature, there is a growing need to assess and evaluate their effectiveness. We briefly survey various ways of assessing and evaluating survivability solutions ranging from model-based studies to Red Team experimentation, and then report our experience of undergoing Red Team experimentation within the APOD project. Based on this experience, we discuss how, in the future, to better evaluate evolving survivability technologies through experimentation.
